Ju Schnee

Ju Schnee is an interdisciplinary illustrator and visual artist based in Berlin. Her works are extremely bright and colorful, energetic and vibrant. They range from digital illustration and motion design to real 3D installations and murals. Ju always works in an abstract way, combining her signature shapes with different mediums. "I'm in love with shapes, colors and textures. Bauhaus, Memphis, Japanese graphic design and surrealism were the most influential movements for my work. That's why I work mainly with abstract and living elements. It doesn't matter if it's an animation, a mural or an installation. I let my forms flow into each of my works. For me, it's magical to tell a story with abstract elements and special textures alone. But the most important thing is: I want to spread joy. Without joy, all my work is meaningless." Her story began in Austria, where she studied information design (BA) and communication (MA) in her hometown of Graz. In 2017, the artist moved to Berlin and started doing personal illustrations. Since 2020 she has her own studio in Berlin Mitte.

When did you start working as an artist?

Always hard to pinpoint an exact time for that since I've actually been a sort of artist all my life. But when it comes to when I first seriously considered selling my work and thus having my main income, that would have been 01.01.2020. On this day I got the keys to my studio in Berlin and that was thus the starting signal for my career as an artist.

I can freely do what lies dormant in my deepest inner self. I can develop myself creatively and be ME. I am my own boss, my own muse and my own creator.

Why did you start working as an artist?

Because there was simply no alternative for me. I always wanted to be an artist, all my life. Due to several reasons (fear, respect, comfort) I first took other paths, but in the end, I always came back to art. For this reason, I simply had to become an artist, because it feels like a kind of calling to me and I can't imagine any other "profession" for my life.

Who and what inspires you?

I am constantly inspired by life. I can't be uninspired at all. Everything I see, feel, taste and hear inspires me. That's what makes me an artist: the ability to transform all sensory impressions into art.

People also inspire me. Old masters as well as new contemporary artists. I am a fan of Miro or Matisse as well as Cathrin Hoffman and Josh Sperling.

Is there something or someone that influences you?

I am definitely very interested in art history and have been inspired and influenced by some life stories of various artists. Exciting and successful life stories push me to be the best version of myself and push my ideas and dreams further.

What materials do you work with and why?

My work is very interdisciplinary and so are my materials. I work analog and physical, but also digital and virtual. I work a lot on the computer with various 3D and video programs.

Analogously, I use oil paint for my canvases. It allows me to paint the smallest and finest color gradients smoothly, unlike acrylic, for example. This allows me to give my paintings exactly the perfected depth I desire.

My current sculptures are made of resin.

Are there colours and shapes that you prefer?

I love organic and round shapes. Everything that can nestle and merge with each other. My color spectrum is very wide and really knows no boundaries. I like to be loud and flashy.

In my studio in Berlin Mitte.

Do you want to say something with your art?

My art is first and foremost a mirror of myself. Of my life, my views, my fears and dreams. You don't always see these emotions and stories at first glance, which is why I like to give viewers the freedom to search for their own story in it. I want viewers to engage with my art by extending or touching my sculptures with AR, for example. I want to treat the art openly and encourage participation.

What is important to you in your work?

My work always consists of movement, both the sculptures and the paintings. For me, standing still means death at the same time. Life is a wave - sometimes flatter, sometimes more turbulent. But it always goes on, up and down. Movement has always been an interesting point in my life. Playing with balance and speed.

What are your goals?

My dream is to develop my own language of forms that can be recognized internationally. Where my art will lead is still open. Maybe it won't stay with sculpture and painting and will become much more multilayered. But my forms will remain. They may adapt and evolve, but they definitely won't go anywhere.

What would you like to achieve in 5 years?

In 5 years, I want to still be having fun with my art and life, first and foremost. Of course, if I've done a few more solo exhibitions by then, I'd be even happier ;)
