Alexander Höller
As "The Emotion Artist," Alexander Höller, born in Schweinfurt in 1996, presented his large-format "Forest" paintings at the Martina Kaiser Gallery in Cologne in 2020 shortly after graduating from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and celebrated a great success. A strong debut, as a large part of the works were already sold within a very short time. Soon after, two of his works were shown in Berlin as part of the "Messe in St. Agnes" event at Johann König's internationally highly renowned gallery. In his abstract-expressionist "Forest" paintings Höller dealt with the process of becoming and passing away. In his new series "The Silent Scream," the 24-year-old Munich painter is now following in the footsteps of Edvard Munch's masterpiece "The Scream." Furious in color, radical in form, and above all large-format - Höller's paintings are loud, expressive, and explicit; they provide a view of the inner world of a generation.

When did you start working as an artist?
I bought my first airbrush set when I was 14 years old. At 17, I left home to spend 1 year in Munich at a private drawing school to improve my skills in drawing. At 18 I was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.
Why did you start working as an artist?
I started with graffiti spraying and then switched from walls to canvases. I realized that I can block out everything else when I make art.
Who and what inspires you?
Currently, the behavior of society is the focus of my work. I try to capture time with my new paintings, to make time as I experience it visible. I look at a lot of things though. Munch, DeKooning, Baselitz, Picasso and Basquiat are great artistic positions that were important for art history.
Is there something or someone that influences you?
Yes, my girlfriend.
What materials do you work with and why?
I work with oil, some acrylic and spray paint.
What techniques do you prefer?
My earlier works were very technical. The current series, which I have been working on for about 1 year now, is a turnaround. I have radically changed my style. I would describe the new works as large oil drawings.
Where do you work?
My new studio, which I have moved into now, is in Munich.
Do you want to say something with your art?
I want to raise questions with my work. My paintings look at the viewers. They scream at the viewers - without making a sound. My paintings are MUTE SCREAMS.
What is important to you in your work?
I like to be alone when I work. I am most productive at night.
What are your goals?
I want to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in my lifetime.
What do you want to achieve in 5 years?
In 5 years I'll be 30, I just want to create as many works as I can by then. In 5 years I want to be able to say that I am healthy. Everything else, like exhibitions in big museums, will come naturally, I'm convinced of that. I'm just looking forward to the future.
Are there colors and shapes you prefer?
I like to combine colors that "normally" don't get along so well. I love contrasts: orange - ultramarine, green - red.
